The Lady Crocs, Jamaica’s National 7’S team will be travelling to Chula Vista, California in mid-March 2020 for a 3-way High Performance training camp with the USA and Mexico national teams. This will be in preparation for the final Olympic qualifying tournament to be held in France in June prior to the Tokyo Games later that summer.
“This is a terrific opportunity for our Women’s team,” said Keisha-Ann Down, Vice-President of the Jamaica Rugby Union, “and we are grateful to Jen Gray and Rugby Americas North for both the invite and financial assistance they have offered. With limited resources, we will be relying on this as well as the players own efforts, and hopefully some philanthropic goodwill to make the trip happen.”
From a performance perspective, Jamaica Sevens Head Coach Steve Lewis and Manager Bruce Martin will be making their selections from both the recent New York Sevens tournament, where new players were identified, as well as the two domestic tournaments in Jamaica in January, where Lewis will also hold a High Performance camp along with women’s Coach Lisa Frazer.
“Chula Vista, home of the USA Rugby 7’s program, is a fantastic facility with which I am very familiar, and this get-together will be a real chance for our players and coaches to understand what top-level international rugby is all about, in terms of standards and preparation. Thanks to Emilie Bydwell of USA Rugby for the invite. I can’t wait.” Commented Coach Lewis.
Jamaica qualified for the Olympic Repechage tournament in France going 5-1 at the Rugby Americas North Tournament last summer in the Cayman Islands.
